One of the principal dresses or garments of the Muslim, male
or female,  is character, which is another term for personality.
The character or personality we present to the public can be as
equally important as the outer, under and overgarment

O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their
persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-
Forgiving, Most Merciful.  Al-Ahzab, Chapter #33, Verse #59, HQ
O ye Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover your shame, as well as to be an adornment to you. But the
raiment of righteousness,- that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition!
Al-Araf, Chapter #7, Verse #26)
The word silk or its derivative appears 89 times in 61 hadith in
Bukhari.
From this we learn that
%100 silk garments are made
unlawful for men, under normal circumstances.
A good
number of hadith support this. Whether garments having
percentage of silk are permissible is subject to debate. this.
Everything on the woman must be covered
from with only the
hands and face showing,

  • with clothing not allowing to show her form,

  • and cannot be so thin as for her to be nude
    while dressed.
The man must be covered from navel to
knees at a minimum

  • His clothing must not display  his private
parts, nor be so long as to drag on the ground.

  • While the koofi is generally not a requirement
for men it is a good thing, especially in United
States, as it acts as a dawah tool, so to that
extent one can make argument that it is
    required

  • Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: That Allah's
Apostle said, "Allah will not look on the Day of
Judgment at him who drags his robe (behind
him) out of pride." Abu Bakr said "One side of
my robe slacks down unless I get very
cautious about it." Allah's Apostle said, "But
you do not do that with a pride."  (Book #57,
    Hadith #17, Sahih Bukhari)

Note: The word dragged or its derivative appear 41
times in 41 hadith in Bukhari. It appear 9 times in
relations to how men wear clothes and have to do
with punishment. Six times it appear with explanation
explaining that punishment  have to do with  'not' the
dragging of the garment but with acting proud,
arrogant or conceited as a result or while wearing the
garment. In at least 1 hadith it mentions punishment
without explanation and if this alone is relied upon
without explanation it tend to mislead, as in the
following  example

  • Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: Allah's Apostle
said, "While a man was dragging his Izar on
the ground (behind him), suddenly Allah
made him sink into the earth and he will go
on sinking into it till the Day of Resurrection."
Book #72, Hadith #681, Sahih Bukhari

Note: In the above hadith we have to assume the
man was wearing his izar because it is not very clear
if he was wearing it or carrying it in hand, and if we
conclude such then we must also conclude in what
follows that the Prophet [P] was wearing his garment
and it was dragging on the ground and he lead the
people in salat:

  • Narrated Abu Bakr: We were with Allah's
Apostle when the sun eclipsed. Allah's
Apostle stood up dragging his cloak till he
entered the Mosque. He led us in a two-Rakat
prayer till the sun (eclipse) had cleared. Then
the Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "The sun and the
moon do not eclipse because of someone's
death. So whenever you see these eclipses
pray and invoke (Allah) till the eclipse is
over."  Book #18, Hadith #150, Sahih Bukhari

Note: The key thing to understand here is not the
idea of not dragging the garment but not acting proud
[arrogant, haughty] because of the garment. This fact
will be seen clearly by  the next  hadith, so much for
those who insist that the sin is in the dragging of the
garment itself or wearing it below the ankle and will
recite hadith without explaining the why !!!

  • Narrated 'Abdullah bin Dinar: One day Ibn
'Umar, while in the Mosque, looked at a man
who was dragging his clothes while walking
in one of the corners of the Mosque He said,
"See who is that. I wish he was near to me."
Somebody then said (to Ibn 'Umar), "Don't
you know him, O Abu 'Abdur-Rahman? He is
Muhammad bin Usama." On that Ibn 'Umar
bowed his head and dug the earth with his
hands and then, said, "If Allah's Apostle saw
him, he would have loved him."  Book #57,
    Hadith #80, Sahih Bukhari

  • Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: The Prophet
said Allah will not look, on the Day of
Resurrection at the person who drags his
garment (behind him) out of conceit. On that
Abu Bakr said, "O Allah's Apostle! One side of
my Izar hangs low if I do not take care of it."
The Prophet said, 'You are not one of those
who do that out of conceit."  Book #72,
    Hadith #675, Sahih Bukhari
