Teaching your Child about Islam
                                Freda Shamma   PhD

Children are born in a state of fitra (purity) and then their parents teach
them to be believers or unbelievers. According to the Musnad Ibn Hanbal,
"The children of the unbelievers are better than you grown-ups.  Every living
creature is born with a righteous nature." It is our obligation and duty as
parents to teach our children so that they grow up to be believing, practicing
Muslims.  Sending the child to an Islamic weekend school or to a full-time
Islamic school is an important but minor part of their Islamic education. The
major 'institution of learning' for each child is his family, and the major
'professors' of this institution are the parents.

ROLE MODELING

The most effective way to teach anything to anybody is to be a role model.
This is why Allah sent human beings as prophets to all peoples.  Whether we
willingly accept this job or not, it is a fact that your child learns how to
function in life by watching what you do.  Even the absent parent is role
modeling to the degree that a boy, whose father abandoned his family, will
probably treat his own children the same way.

Every time we deal with our children, we are teaching them, whether we
intend to or not.  There is a famous poem by an anonymous author that
depicts this vividly.  It begins:

If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy.

Therefore we must examine carefully how we deal with our child in order to
have a desirable end result.  This same poem continues:

If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient.
If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice.
If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith.

Teaching Children to Pray - Some Tips
Jul.13, 2008 in Prayer In Islam

Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Asr, narrated
that the Apostle of Allah (peace be
upon him) said,

“Command your children to make
salah when they become seven years
old…”
Abu Dawud

This does not mean that parents can
only start teaching their children how
to perform it when they reach the age
of seven. Rather, informal instruction
should start when a child starts to
show an interest in salah, which
usually occurs around the age of two.
It is only human nature that children
love to imitate their parents. In fact,
this is one method that Allah has
provided us for teaching our youth.

Here are some quick tips:
Informal teaching should start when
child starts to show interest usually
occurs around the age of two.
Let them pretend to make salah.
Invite them to pray along side and
join the family jemaah prayer.
At a young age, children usually
imitate what they see, so it is
important to always pray in front of
them
One of the first steps is to learn al-
Fatihah which should begin around
the age of three or four. Break down
the instructions by using reasonable
number of verses or small segments.
The practice session should only last
between 5 to 15 minutes. At this age
consistency is more important than
length of practice.
Remind them that they are praying to
Allah to thank him for all He has
given them
Important to remember that not all
children are ready at the same time
and that not everyday will the child
be ready to learn new materials.
Educational products can assist
parents in achieving success with their
children because children generally
learn in different ways therefore
introduction of material through
different format (video, coloring book,
going to the masjid) will help ease
and reinforce the learning process.
One of the most important thing that
a parent should do is to praise the
child for each accomplished task and
encouragement to achieve more
success
Teaching Your Chidren to Pray
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 7:
                                                                                                          Narrated Ibn 'Umar:

Allah's Apostle said: Islam is based on (the following) five (principles):

1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Apostle.

2. To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly.

3. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity) .

4. To perform Hajj. (i.e. Pilgrimage to Mecca)

5. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan.

Teaching Children about Allah in Simple Terms

 Praise be to Allaah.

A child can be taught about Allaah in a suitable manner, according to his
level of understanding. He can be told that Allaah is One and has no
partner. He can be told that He is the Creator of all things, so He is the
Creator of the earth, the heavens, people, animals, trees, rivers, etc.

The educator can make the most of some situations by asking the child,
whilst walking through a garden or in the countryside, about Who made
the water, rivers and things in the natural scenery around him, to draw
his attention to the greatness of the Creator.

The father, mother or educators in general may be with a child or group
of children in a car on a journey or a trip at the time of sunset, when the
sun disappears from sight gradually. All that the educator has to do at
that point is to draw the attention of those who are with him to the power
of Allaah displayed in that.

A child can also be taught to understand the bounty of Allaah and the
blessing of good health that He has bestowed upon him. For example,
you could say to him, “Who gave you your hearing, sight and mind? Who
gave you strength and the ability to move?” and so on. The child can also
be encouraged to love Allaah and to thank Him for this blessing and
bounty. Making a child love Allaah and the things that Allaah loves is a
good action which will bring educational benefits sooner or later, by
Allaah’s Leave.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2,
Number 47: Narrated Abu Huraira:

One day while the Prophet was sitting
in the company of some people, (The
angel) Gabriel came and asked, "What
is faith?" Allah's Apostle replied,
'Faith is to believe in Allah, His
angels, (the) meeting with Him, His
Apostles, and to believe in
Resurrection." Then he further asked,
"What is Islam?" Allah's Apostle
replied, "To worship Allah Alone and
none else, to offer prayers perfectly to
pay the compulsory charity (Zakat)
and to observe fasts during the month
of Ramadan." Then he further asked,
"What is Ihsan (perfection)?" Allah's
Apostle replied, "To worship Allah as
if you see Him, and if you cannot
achieve this state of devotion then
you must consider that He is looking
at you." Then he further asked, "When
will the Hour be established?" Allah's
Apostle replied, "The answerer has no
better knowledge than the questioner.
But I will inform you about its
portents.

1. When a slave (lady) gives birth to
her master.

2. When the shepherds of black
camels start boasting and competing
with others in the construction of
higher buildings. And the Hour is one
of five things which nobody knows
except Allah.

The Prophet then recited: "Verily, with
Allah (Alone) is the knowledge of the
Hour--." (31. 34) Then that man
(Gabriel) left and the Prophet asked
his companions to call him back, but
they could not see him. Then the
Prophet said, "That was Gabriel who
came to teach the people their
religion." Abu 'Abdullah said: He (the
Prophet) considered all that as a part
of faith.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 3, Number 100: Narrated
'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al' As:

I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "Allah does not take away the
knowledge, by taking it away from (the hearts of) the people, but
takes it away by the death of the religious learned men till when
none of the (religious learned men) remains, people will take as
their leaders ignorant persons who when consulted will give their
verdict without knowledge. So they will go astray and will lead
the people astray."

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 17, Number 149:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar:

Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) said, "Keys of the unseen knowledge are
five which nobody knows but Allah . . . nobody knows what will
happen tomorrow; nobody knows what is in the womb; nobody
knows what he will gain tomorrow; nobody knows at what place
he will die; and nobody knows when it will rain."

Last Sermon of the Messenger of Allaah  [SAAS]

This Sermon was delivered on the Ninth Day of Dhul Hijjah 10 A.H in the Uranah Valley of mount Arafat

"O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I don't know whether, after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore
listen to what I am saying to you carefully and take these words to those who could not be present here today.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a
sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.
Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds. Allaah has forbidden you to
take usury (Interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived...
Beware of Satan, for your safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big
things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have right over you. If they abide
by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to
them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of
whom you do not approve, as well as never to commit adultery.

O People, listen to me in earnest, worship Allaah, say your five daily prayers (Salaah), fast during the month of
Ramadaan, and give your wealth in Zakaat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to. You know that every Muslim is the brother
of another Muslim. You are all equal. Nobody has superiority over other except by piety and good action.

Remember, one day you will appear before Allaah and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not astray from the path of
righteousness after I am gone.

O People, no prophet or apostle will come after me and no new faith will be born. Reason well, therefore, O People, and
understand my words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the Qur'an and my example, the Sunnah and
if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand
my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness oh Allaah that I have conveyed your message to your
people."
