The term for Engagement is Khitbah. We have heard of circumstances where one brother has proposed the marriage to a sister whom another brother has already prospsed to. This should not be and is a sin in Islam and disobedience and in some cases rebellion against Allah, azza wa jal, and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. Such acts destroys the mutual harmony, trust and unity in the Muslim community. "Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with them) reported Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) as having said this: A person should not enter into a transaction when his brother (had already entered into but not finalised), and he should not make proposal of marriage upon the proposal already made by his brother, until he permits it." Sahih Muslim, Book 008, Number 3287 Book 008, Number 3292: "Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Muslim should not purchase in opposition to his brother, and he should not make the proposal of marriage on the proposal already made by his brother."
